NOTES: Coach Bruce and the nine-year old Brookline Knights came
to West Allegheny Stadium to do battle with a tough Moon Tigers
team for the right to advance to the 2012 SSYFL Super Bowl. The
Knights fought hard and came from behind in the second half to
beat the Tigers, 12-8. For these young Knights, the reward for
their hard work is a trip to the upcoming championship game.
The Knights defense played a strong game. Their intentions were
clear right from the start. The Tigers first possession ended
on the second play. A crushing hit behind the line of scrimmage
jarred the ball loose from a Tiger runner and Nicholas Ault
recovered for Brookline. Over the course of the game, they took
the best Moon could offer and held the Tigers to one score.
Moon drew first blood at 6:12 of the second quarter. They drove
fifty-three yards in eleven plays. A one yard touchdown run and
a good conversion gave them an 8-0 advantage and some momentum.
Lineman Zachary Kalsek put Brookline right back in contention
by returning the ensuing kickoff sixty-five yards to shave the
Moon lead to 8-6.
Brookline's offense sputtered for nearly thirty minutes, then
awoke with a bang. Thirty-seven seconds remained in the third
quarter when Jamyle Liebro caught a Grant Hamilton pass and
took it seventy-eight yards to put Brookline ahead, 12-8.
The Tigers next possession was cut short when Bradon Logan
stripped the ball loose from a Moon receiver and Mekhi Gay
recovered for the Knights. Brookline gained two critical first
downs and burned five minutes off of the clock before turning
the ball over at the Moon twenty-six yard line. Two minutes
remained. The Tigers still had time for one more drive.
Two long passes moved the ball forward into Knights territory.
Like so many times before, the pressure was on late in the game
and the defense needed some big plays. A sack by Ethan Parker
set the Tigers back across midfield. Then, on the next play, an
interception by Dylan Studer sealed the victory for the Knights.
With only thirty seconds left, Hamilton took a knee and
Brookline's Nines were headed to the Big Dance.
By the numbers:
Brookline ran twenty-six plays and gained 124 yards. The ground
attack was 22-37 (Antwain Carter 11/19, Grant Hamilton 3/12,
Jamyle Liebro 6/8, Mekhi Gay 1/1, Andrew Cagey 1/-2). Hamilton
completed three of four passes, all to Liebro, for eighty-seven
yards. The Knights added another eighty-eight yards on kick
returns and sixty-five on interception returns. The defense had
four takeaways. Eathan Parker and Mekhi Gay each had one sack.
Moon ran thirty-eight plays and gained 135 yards. They rushed
for sixty-four yards on twenty-nine carries and completed five
passes for another seventy-eight. The Tigers had an additional
nine on kick returns and fifteen on an interception return. The
Tigers held a 25:07-14:53 advantage in time of possession. Both
teams were penalized three times.
The Moon Tigers played a good game. It was close and came down
to the wire. In the end, they were unable to overcome both
their own errors and the gritty, determined Brookline Knights.
Congratulations to Coach Bruce, Coach Dave, Coach Jay and all
the Knights players on getting to the Super Bowl. Take a moment
to enjoy the rush. It's well deserved. Starting tomorrow it's
time to focus on the final opponent, the Spartans of Montour.

NOTES: Coach Donnie and Brookline's ten-year old top-seeded
Knights annihilated the North Hills Warriors, 36-6, to claim a
ticket to next week's SSYFL Super Bowl game. Brookline built a
22-0 lead by the end of the first quarter, and increased that
to 36-0 by halftime. It was another resounding Knight victory.
Brookline's high-octane offense churned out 298 total yards,
averaging over ten yards a play. Mason Ventrone led the Knights
attack with 146 yards and two touchdowns. This included six
carries for 122 yards and one reception for twenty-four more.
Marques Watson powered his way to 134 yards on nine rushes and
two touchdowns. Dominic "The Bull" Leonard contributed another
sixteen yards on five touches. The offensive line made this
rampage possible by totally controlling the line of scrimmage.
The Knights fearsome defense was once again a dominant force,
holding the Warriors attack to 101 total yards on thirty-four
carries. Seventy-two of those came during a seventeen-play
North Hills second half drive against the Brookline reserves.
The Warriors held a 29:39-10:21 edge in time of possession.
With this playoff victory, the Knights record improves to 10-0.
Next week Brookline meets the Thomas-Jefferson Jaguars at Moon
Stadium in the championship game. After last year's Super Bowl
defeat, these Knights are just one game away from redemption.
Nothing is going to stand in their way. Let's git-r-done.
