NOTES: Coach Mike Orsi and Brookline's high-flying, undefeated
Knights came to Thomas-Jefferson High School with high hopes
for a Super Bowl championship. The underdog Moon Tigers arrived
with lofty aspirations themselves. The two teams collided
head-on and the concussion brought them quickly down to earth.
What followed was a knock-down, drag-out brawl that took all of
forty minutes and three overtimes to decide. When the smoke
cleared on the field of battle, the Tigers had prevailed over
the heavily-favored Knights by the score of 20-14.
For four quarters, Brookline and Moon clashed, slashed and
smashed each other with a fiercesome resolve. The opposing
defenses put on an exercise in containment and bitter reality.
They shut down the ground lanes and closed the airwaves. In the
face of such determined resistance, neither offense was able to
mount an effective drive. At the end of regulation play, and
much to everyone's surprise, the game was a scoreless draw.
After a brief pause, the game proceeded to overtime. Although
both teams became familiar with the endzone, the stalemate
continued. The first overtime resulted in a 6-6 tie, and the
second ended deadlocked at 14-14. A turnover on Brookline's
third possession left Moon with an opportunity. For the third
time, the Tigers punched the ball into the endzone to secure
their title victory. In stunned disbelief, the Knights stood
at midfield and accepted the runner-up trophy. The Tigers of
Moon were the 2011 Super Bowl champions.
All season long, the Knights game plan centered on a reliable
ball-control, power-running, attack that wore down opponents.
On this day, however, that big gun remained silent. Brookline
never advanced beyond the Moon thirty-three yard line. The
Tigers faired slightly better, spending most of the game in
Brookline territory and penetrating the Knight redzone once.
By the numbers:
The Knights gained ninety-seven yards rushing (Marques Watson
39/88, Dominic Leonard 3/6, Nick Roell 5/5, Quinn Hunter 1/-2).
Quarterback Roell was two-of-three passing for fourteen more
and one touchdown. Brookline made four first downs, returned
two kicks for twelve yards, was penalized four times for a loss
of twenty, and had 123 yards in total offense. The Knights also
lost two of three fumbles. The yellow flags came at critical
times, snuffing out brief bursts of momentum.
The Tigers rushed for 112 yards in forty-eight carries and
completed two-of-six passes, netting another twenty-seven. Moon
gained four first downs, was penalized once for a loss of five,
and had 139 in total offense. The Tigers came up nearly ten
minutes behind in time of possession, 15:06 to 24:54. They
overcame that disadvantage with a strong defensive effort.
Coach Mike and his Brookline Nines finished the season with an
outstanding 10-1 record. Despite this heartbreaking loss, the
nine-year olds can rest comfortably on the laurels of this
year's accomplishments. With a strong core of seasoned veterans
returning in 2012, they can build on the lessons learned in
this campaign and make Y2K12 the Year of the Knights.

A FINAL NOTE: Marques "Mar Mar" Watson finished the 2011 season
with twenty-two touchdowns and seventeen two-point conversions
for a total of 166 points. That's a remarkable achievement. Not
since 1998 have the Knights had such a productive point-scorer.
With all of the attention focused on eleven-year old Quran Powe
and his pursuit of the all-time scoring mark, Watson's amazing
season was somewhat overshadowed. Marques is a talented young
runner, only beginning to tap into his potential. In a year or
two, maybe it'll be Marques Watson re-writing the record books.

NOTES: The Brookline Knights eleven-year olds captured the 2011
SSYFL Super Bowl championship with a 60-12 victory over the
West Allegheny Indians. The wrath of the Power Posse descended
upon T-J Stadium like a maelstrom of fire and pestilence. The
red-hot Knights consumed the Indians in a display of gridiron
dominance that ranks among the greatest in the long and storied
history of Brookline Knights football.
The Knights lit up the scoreboard with eight touchdowns and
scorched the turf for over 400 yards in total offense. Aside
from two plays, Brookline's defense held the Indians to only
sixty. By the end of the first quarter, the score was 14-6. By
halftime it had risen to 38-6. Brookline hit the 50-point mark
in the third period, and set a season-high with sixty midway
through the fourth. Nothing could stop the scoring blitz.
Offensively, Brookline's rushers totalled 343 yards (Quran Powe
14/180 3 TD, Darryl Daniels 10/141 2 TD, Lamar Lewis 5/16 and
Brent Ivory 4/6 1 TD). Ivory completed four-of-seven in the air
for seventy-nine yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.
His main target was Powe, who had three catches for seventy-six
yards, including a picture perfect twenty-five yard touchdown
reception that had WebGem stamped on the replay.
On the opposite side of the line, Brookline's defenders held
the Indians to 196 yards rushing in twenty-two carries. The
West Allegheny quarterback completed no passes in six attempts,
was sacked once for a loss of twelve, and was harried at all
times by a swarm of Knight defenders. The Indians managed only
two first downs and lost one fumble.
For Coach Joe Nicholas and his Deputies in Green and Black, the
title triumph is the culmination of several months of hard work
and dedication. Since the heartache of last season's semi-final
playoff loss, Nicholas and his Knights have had only one goal
in mind ... redemption. The team practiced hard, and played
harder. With the venerable Coach Joe leading the way, a 10-1
record and a Super Bowl victory are the fruits of their labor.
The championship is the first for these Knight players, and the
fifth overall for Coach Joe (1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2011),
tying him with Don Helman for the most championships flying the
Brookline banner. For the Knights program, this is the fifth
Super Bowl championship since entering the SSYFL in 2006.
Speaking of all-time records, running back Quran Powe again lit
up the scoreboard with thirty-four points. His five touchdowns
increased his record-setting season total to thirty-five, an
average of over three per game. Including conversions, Quran
scored a staggering 228 points in only eleven weekends. Wow!
Now it's time to sit back and savor the sweet taste of victory.
Oh, How Sweet It Is!!!

***************************************************************
And Finally ... Some Things I Think I Think:
- The addition of Trevor Hazen and Josh Gmys on the offensive
and defensive line made a big difference this year. Hazen was
a rock at nose guard and a battering ram at center. Gmys, only
ten years old, brought size and steadily improved as he gained
confidence. Along with Daejon Brentley and Dominic Emma they
formed a reliable and solid front line.
- Brent Ivory is a natural leader. His calm demeanor and the
confidence he inspires in his peers is priceless.
- Lamar Lewis may be pint-sized, but he plays large and makes
a big splash wherever he is on the field.
- Others, like Branden Wysong, are quiet. You don't notice him
until he makes another huge play. A Golden Gloves champion
boxer, Wysong was invaluable on defense.
- Will Rupert is another quiet one. Don't let his size fool
you. He is quick and he can plaster even the biggest opponent.
- When the reserve defense plays, Jeremy Jenkins is like 911.
He holds them together and saves many a touchdown when a stray
runner enters the defensive backfield. As quarterback of the
reserve offense, he is most accustomed to moving in reverse.
It was nice to see him finally break a long run in the forward
direction for a touchdown at Baldwin.
- Khalil Weathers came on strong and made a big impact. He's
quick, he hits hard, and he has great hands.
- Darryl Daniels is the reincarnation of Speedy Gonzalez. I'm
glad I don't have to chase him. Sometimes he moves like Neo.
- Quran Powe is a natural. His best play is when he runs back
twenty yards, spreads out the defense, and then threads his
way like a magician back through the pack for long touchdowns.
Quran is the type of thoroughbred player that turns playoff
calibre teams into Super Bowl champions.
- It's going to be a Happy Thanksgiving in the Nicholas house.
This is Coach Joe's first championship in eleven years. No one
deserved it more. He and Lisa are the heart and soul of the
Knights program. To see him so happy after the frustrations
and pressures of the presidency is heartwarming. This may have
been his sweetest victory of all.
- If Coach Joe really is coming back next season, I hope he
brings some of Lisa's "Almost Famous" hot sausage and a few
buns. It's a Brookline Knight tradition, for me at least.
- Being a champion is a privilege that is earned, not granted.
Enjoy the thrill of it all, because everyone knows the many
hardships you overcame to earn it. Hard work makes winners.
- I think I think too much ...
