NOTES: Brookline's Nines made it ten-in-a-row and earned a trip
to the 2011 SSYFL Super Bowl with a 20-12 semi-final victory
over the Southside Sabres. The underdog Sabres put up a tough
fight, staying within striking range until the final minutes.
But, when the timeclock expired, it was the Brookline Knights
holding the invitation to next week's finale.
On both sides of the ball, the Knights dominated the contest.
The offense, led by quarterback Nick Roell and running back
Marques Watson, drove methodically up and down the field.
Brookline gained thirteen first downs and converted on six
fourth down plays. Southside managed one first down the entire
game. With the exception of a long kickoff return and one long
pass play, the Knights completely shut down the Sabres.
Despite the absence of any offensive punch, a scrappy Southside
defense kept the game close. The score was 6-6 at halftime.
Down by fourteen late in the game, the Sabres scored with 1:44
remaining in the fourth quarter to pull within eight points. A
last-ditch onside kick attempt was pounced on by Aidan Logan,
ending any hopes of a Black and Gold comeback. Once more, the
Sabres finished three bricks shy of a load and the Knights are
moving on to the big dance.
By the numbers:
Brookline rushed fifty-five times for 212 yards (Marques Watson
36/150, Nick Roell 10/58, Dominic Leonard 4/10, Quinn Hunter
3/4, Jayneil Latham 2/-10). Roell completed one-of-five passes
for twelve yards, and Watson was one-of-one for eighteen. The
Knights returned three kicks for nineteen yards, giving them a
grand total of 261 yards for the day. Brookline was penalized
twice for ten yards and lost one of two fumbles.
Southside gained thirteen yards on twelve carries, completed
one of three passes for fifty-seven, and returned four kicks
for an additional seventy-two. They were sacked once for a nine
yard loss. That's a total of 133 yards, 122 of which came on
two plays. The Sabres were penalized twice for ten yards and
lost one of two fumbles.
Coach Mike and his Brookline Nines now advance to the SSYFL
championship round next Saturday versus the Moon Tigers. The
game will be played at Thomas-Jefferson High School Stadium.

NOTES: Coach Joe and Brookline's eleven-year old Knights came
to Moon High School to once again wage war against the Spartans
of Montour. The highly-anticipated "Battle of the Titans" lived
up to it's pre-game billing. After consecutive losses to the
Spartans, Brookline's double-overtime win over their suburban
nemesis is proof positive that the third time is a charm.
The Knights put the past behind and stuck it to the Spartans.
They gave as good as they got. It was a struggle for supremacy.
The tide of momentum flowed, and the frequent mood swings kept
the crowd on the edge of their seats. After forty minutes of
bruising, bitter warfare, the score was deadlocked at six-all.
The game moved to overtime, and the prime-time drama continued.
Montour got first possession and used all four plays to punch
the ball into the endzone. A conversion failure left the score
at 12-6. Brookline answered in three plays. A Brent Ivory burst
tied things up at 12-12. An endzone pass fell incomplete and
the game entered another extra round.
Brookline saw their opportunity and seized the moment. A three
yard plunge up the middle by Quran Powe put Brookline back on
top. Powe aced the conversion to give the Knights a commanding
eight-point lead. Now it was time for the defense to rise to
the occasion, and rise they did.
Led by Darryl Daniels, Brookline snuffed the Spartan spirit and
slammed the door shut. Four plays netted only two yards. The
Knights were victorious. The Spartan menace had finally been
vanquished. The third time really is the charm, and now Coach
Joe and his Deputies are going to the Super Bowl.
This was, without a doubt, the hardest contest of the season.
It was a great game and a pleasure to watch. For Coach Joe,
this will be his first trip back to the title game in eleven
years. For everyone else, it is the first trip ever. Now let's
get down to work and make the most of this big chance.
By the numbers:
The Knights offense gained 194 total yards, 172 on the ground
and twenty-two through the air. Lamar Lewis led the Brookline
runners (9/58), followed by Darryl Daniels (13/57), Quran Powe
(18/51) and Brent Ivory (3/6). Ivory completed five-of-ten
passes for an additional twenty-two yards and one touchdown.
Brookline was penalized three times for twenty-five yards, lost
two fumbles and had one pass intercepted. The Knights made nine
first downs.
Montour gained ninety-nine total yards, rushing twenty-seven
times for sixty-eight and completing three-of-ten passes for
thirty-one more. The Spartans lost one fumble and threw two
interceptions. They were penalized once for a loss of five,
and held to only three first downs.
Brookline (9-1) will play West Allegheny (10-0) next Saturday
in the championship game at Thomas-Jefferson High School.
