WEEK #9 - October 23, 2011 @ West Allegheny High School
13-UNDER
West Allegheny 28 - BROOKLINE 6
Scoring Summary:
Quinton Hill 23 pass from Taylor Thornton (conversion failed)
Fumble Recovery: Anthony McCray, Taylor Thornton
NOTES: The Brookline Knights 13-year olds finished the regular
season with a 28-6 loss to the West Allegheny Indians. It was
another tough outing for the Knights, whose offense managed
only a couple big plays, and whose defense gave up more than
enough yardage to keep the Indians on the warpath.
West Allegheny struck on their first play from scrimmage, a
seventy-one yard dash down the left sideline, to jump off to an
early 6-0 lead. The Knight offense was unable to move on their
first two series. The Indians third possession produced three
touchdown runs. The first two were called back on penalties.
The third time was for real, and West Allegheny went into the
halftime break with a 14-0 advantage.
A Brookline turnover to begin the second half led to a third
West Allegheny score. Taylor Thornton had a nice return on the
ensuing kickoff, then connected with Anthony McCray for twenty
yards to advance the Knights to Indian thirty yard line. Four
plays later the drive stalled. A fourth Indian run to the goal
with two minutes to go in the final quarter increased their
lead to 28-0.
The Knights managed a last minute flurry of offense to avoid a
shutout. A thirty-two yard pass from Thornton to Dylan DiRenna,
followed by a twenty-three yard toss to Quinton Hill gave the
Knights a quick six before the final buzzer.
One thing that stood out on this bright Autumn morning was the
pleasant and entertaining commentary coming from the Indian's
scoring booth. The voices were young, and full of spirit. They
had some catchy comments and did a great job calling the plays.
Eleven-year old Ike Bower and ten-year old Jamie Diven deserve
a round of applause.
Brookline finished the season with a 2-6 record and the #8 seed
in post-season. Next week, the Knights will take on the first
place Carlynton Cougars in the opening round of the playoffs.
