Brookline
Wins Title On No-Hitter
Brookline's Little League
All-Stars are the District 4 champions after eliminating Carrick, 2-0;
Bon-Air Knoxville, 6-5, and Mt. Oliver, 18-0.
Milan Vukelich, a husky
righthander, pitched a no-hitter at Community Center Field Friday night,
July 26, as Brookline turned on a homerun barrage to send the Mt. Oliver
youngsters home shell-shocked. Vukelich, Jimmy Spadafore and Terry
Sullivan connected for the circuit while Craig Sausto and Mike Gremba
slammed four hits apiece in the 18-hit bombardment. Vukelich fanned 10
and walked five in his pitching classic.
On Thursday night, July 25,
Brookline hurdled a stiff test by nipping Bon-Air Knowville in a battle
in which the lead changed hands four times. Vukelich, Sausto and
Spadafore smashed homeruns. Spadafore's sock with Bobby Jackonic on base
was the deciding hit. Sausto, the third Brookline pitcher, was credited
with the victory, hurling two scoreless innings.
Gremba and Tommy Fagan had perfect
nights at bat with three hits each. Vukelich, Sausto and Paul Ingold had
a pair each as Brookline blasted 15 safeties.
In the two-night stand at
Community Center Field against Bon-Air Knoxville and Mt. Oliver, the
Brookline Little Leaguers slammed 33 hits. They had eight in the Little
League Tournament opener at Carrick for a combined total of 41 in three
games.
Note: Brookline lost their next
game to Morningside, 4-3, in seven innings.
