Comments: Corporal Gormley was a member of the
39th Field Artillery Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division. He
was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy in South Korea
on May 24, 1951. Corporal James W. Gormley was posthumously
awarded the Silver Star for his actions on May 24, 1951.
Corporal Gormley stayed behind as an artillery spotter to
cover the withdrawal of his unit. When surrounded,
he called in an artillery strike on his position.
