On May 20, 2009, the Brookline
Recreation Center hosted a Spring Car Cruise. The sun was shining brightly
and it was a perfect evening for a trip back in time. Over fifty classic
vehicles filled the lower parking lot and the party was on.
As the DJ played classic
oldies and Milan worked the grill toasting his Almost Famous Frankfurters,
a steady crowd strolled the lot to admire the variety of beautiful cars.
In addition to a fine selection of automobiles, several Harley-Davidsons were
on display. To the delight of the young ones, firefighters from Engine House #26
and several motorcycle policemen brought along their prefered modes of
transportation.
The most unusual attraction was
the new Pittsburgh Police S.W.A.T. vehicle, an SUV that resembled a cross
between a tank and an armored car. Carlos Schrader and his fellow officers
brought along some of their equipment, including helmets, gas masks and body
armor, to give the kids a feeling for what it's like to gear up for a
mission.

Votes were cast for the People's
Choice Award winner. While raffle prizes were distributed, the votes
were counted. When the tally was complete, the People's Choice was
a 1970 Red Cutlass Sport owned by Dan Pirring. The Runner-Up was a 1963
Ford Thunderbird owned by Bill Mueller. Honorable Mention went to
Foxy Roxie's 1977 Blue Corvette.
As an added treat, WPXI cameraman
and Brookline native Jackie Klingensmith was on hand to shoot some video
for the Car Cruisin' section of the Channel 11 webpage, www.wpxi.com. People's Choice winner Dan Pirring was the featured
interview.

It was a fun night for
everyone in attendance and the Recreation Center staff would like to
thank all of our patrons who came to make our Spring Car Cruise a
fine success. We hope to see you all again in August for our Brookline
Breeze Week show. Special thanks to Job Bob Greico, a neighborhood
classic himself, whose tireless efforts and enthusiasm made this our
best Cruise yet!
