This home at 1700 Saw Mill Run
Boulevard, at the corner with Whited Street, shown above in 1945 with
the large billboard on the side, had been on the maps since the late-1870s.
The vintage homestead underwent many changes in the decades that it stood
on this spot.
The early history of the home is not
known, but it was built on land owned by the Pittsburgh Coal Company, which
operated a substantial mining operation in the valley along Whited
Street.

at the bottom of Whited (Oak) Street, shown in the early-1920s.
The home once sported a large front
yard with plenty of open space leading down to the adjacent creek. After
construction of the boulevard in 1929, which sliced through the front of the
property, the side and back yard were converted into an Amoco service station
by the homeowner, George M. Clement.

The home, now listed as 1700 Saw Mill Run
Boulevard, in 1934 (left) and 1936.
The path of Saw Mill Run Boulevard went
directly through the front yard of the property, so close to the home that the
front porch had to be removed to make room for the sidewalk. The side yard
along Whited Street was used for the placement of gas pumps at the now busy
intersection.
Over the years, beginning in 1945, the
property underwent several changes and upgrades. The photos below show how
Clement's Service Station evolved over above 1945 photo.

In 1946 there was a new building on the lot,
a two-car service garage.

A 1947 fire destroyed the attendants office
and the service shed. The home
was soon torn down to be replaced by a much larger service station.

In 1950, the property was now home to the
new and enlarged Clement's Amoco Service Station.

In 1956, the new Clement's service station was
franchised with a new brand of gasoline, Mobil.
In 1957, the service station,
by then carrying the Esso label, was converted into a sports shop, offering
in a variety of watercraft and boating accessories. In 1978, the property was
sold, for $113,000, to the Landmark Sign Company, who operated into the
mid-1990s.
The property sold to Michael Pope for
$265,000 in 1997, then was acquired via sheriff's deed by the Iron and Glass
Bank for $1,414 ($265,000). In 2003 Maggs and Associates, Inc, purchased the
lot for $275,000 ($429,000), and it has since been the branch office Jack Maggs
Agency, an insurance company that also offers title transfers, notary and
vehicle registration services.

By 1957, service station was still
there, but the building was also home to Clement's Sport Shop.

The lot at 1700 Saw Mill Run Boulevard is now
occupied by the Jack Maggs Agency.
