8-UNDER JV GAME (exhibition game)
BROOKLINE 14 - West Allegheny 0
Scoring Summary:
Seth Derrick 40 run (Brenton Morefield run)
Nick Roell 25 run (conversion failed)
Fumble Recovery: Seth Derrick
NOTES: The old adage goes something like this:
Big Things come in Small Packages.
It couldn't have been truer on this chilly Saturday morning.
On a day that would see the older Knights teams get scoured,
skinned and scalped by the West Allegheny Indians, our little
Knights opened the day with a strong 14-0 victory in this JV
exhibition contest.
Thank God for Small Favors.
Seth, Nick, Brenton and the rest of our little ones were the
truly bright spot on this otherwise dismal autumn day.
WEEK #7 - October 10, 2009
The West Allegheny Indians went on the warpath. Their target
was McGibbeny Field in Brookline. It was a real bloodbath.
The Knights in shining armor were no match for the red horde.
The Indians pillaged. They plundered. Then they left, just as
silently as they came. We were lucky to escape with our lives.
WEEK #7 - October 10, 2009 @ McGibbeny Field
8-UNDER
West Allegheny 30 - BROOKLINE 6
Scoring Summary:
Cole McMullan 31 run (conversion failed)
Fumble Recovery: Dante Douglas
NOTES: West Allegheny scored on their first three possessions
and took a 24-0 lead into halftime. Another score was negated
by a penalty in the final moments of the half. West Allegheny
totally dominated the half. Brookline fans watched helplessly
as the Knights could do nothing to stem the endless red tide.
The second half was actually a pretty good game, if taken as a
separate contest. The two teams played to a 6-6 tie, complete
with some excellent offensive and defensive drama.
Cole McMullan opened the second half with two fine runs. His
first was to the left for twenty-five yards. It put Brookline
in West Allegheny territory for the first and only time during
the game. McMullan then went right with a thirty-one yard run
to the endzone. The Knights were on the scoreboard!
The Indians followed with a long drive inside the Brookline
ten yard line. The Knight defense got tough and stopped the
West Allegheny surge three yards short of the goal. It was
the only time Brookline kept the Indian offense in check.
The final points came with 1:18 to go in the game. The Indians
marched sixty yards and scored on a twenty yard run. The final
tally read 30-6, but our little Knights put on a good show in
the second frame to salvage some pride and end on a good note.
WEEK #7 - October 10, 2009 @ McGibbeny Field
9-UNDER
West Allegheny 38 - BROOKLINE 16
Scoring Summary:
Cullin Baker 71 run (Darryl Daniels run)
Darryl Daniels 29 run (Cullin Baker run)
NOTES: This was another bad game for the Knights. The Indians
moved the ball at will while the Knights struggled to find any
offensive pulse. West Allegheny scored on their first three
possessions to take an early 22-0 lead. Brookline looked dead.
As the buzzer sounded to end the first quarter, the Knights
showed signs of life. Cullin Baker took a handoff from Brent
Ivory and streaked around the left side. Baker broke free and
led his pursuers on a seventy-one yard race downfield. Baker's
touchdown, followed by Darryl Daniels conversion run, put the
Knights back in the game, down by only fourteen points.
The good feeling didn't last long. West Allegheny scored on
their next two possessions to increase their lead to 38-8,
ending any thought of a potential comeback.
Brookline scored once more in the final minute when Daniels
shook loose a couple defenders and took off on a twenty-nine
yard touchdown run. Baker added the two-point conversion to
set the final tally at 38-16.
Defensively, the Knights did sparkle briefly late in the first
half. The Indians were deep in Brookline territory and moving
steadily onward. On successive plays, first Marshal White,
then Cullin Baker, surged into the West Allegheny backfield.
Both stopped their targets with piercing solo hits. They held
back the red rush long enough for the game clock to intervene.
WEEK #7 - October 10, 2009 @ McGibbeny Field
10-UNDER
West Allegheny 38 - BROOKLINE 0
Fumble Recovery: Troy Bryant
NOTES: West Allegheny crushed the Knights in the first half.
The halftime score was 38-0. They dominated both sides of the
line of scrimmage, and their knack for recovering onside kicks
became a persistent source of agony and despair.
The Knight defense was helpless to stop the Indian attack, and
the Brookline offense struggled to move the ball. Quarterback
Jacob Mellon left the game with a possible concussion late in
the first half. Receiver Jake Devers took over at the helm.
As the clock ran down near the end of the game, Devers ripped
off a thirty-five yard run that livened up the Brookline fans.
We send our sincerest well wishes to Jacob Mellon and family,
hoping that he'll be OK and feeling better soon.
WEEK #7 - October 10, 2009 @ McGibbeny Field
11-UNDER
West Allegheny 34 - BROOKLINE 0
Fumble Recovery: Bryan Bergener, Amaree Hatcher
Interception: Taylor Thornton
NOTES: Last week we said Brookline was on a roll. Today the
Knights rolled over and played dead. From the opening gate,
they stumbled and bumbled, grumbled and fumbled, and looked
like they were collectively suffering from the seasonal flu.
At halftime, the score was 28-0 and Brookline was bedridden.
There were, however, some rather interesting highlights in
this unexpected visit to the infirmary.
West Allegheny tried seven onside kicks and recovered three.
Over the course of three games, the Indians made good on five
onside kicks. It seemed as if all their kickoffs were executed
in this manner. The guerilla tactic worked effectively, sowing
confusion in the Knights battle line.
In first quarter action, Bryan Bergener recovered an Indian
fumble and returned it ten yards, then fumbled the ball away.
Amaree Hatcher pounced on the hot potato at the West Allegheny
thirty-five yard line. A sixteen yard run by Taylor Thornton
positioned the spud in the Indian redzone. It was Brookline's
high water mark for the day.
A West Allegheny running back opened the second quarter with a
fifty-three yard dash through open ground. Loren Wicks tracked
the runaway and dropped him at the Brookline ten. The play led
to a goal line stand that was the Knight's shining moment.
The score could've been much worse. However, despite the poor
performance, it was just one game. That's the important thing
to remember. Go home, take your medicine, and start preparing
for next week's meeting with Montour. Things will get better.
Sorry to see Dylan DiRenna hobbled by a cracked fibula. Dylan
played a great game last week. Get better soon!
WEEK #7 - October 10, 2009 @ McGibbeny Field
13-UNDER
BROOKLINE W - West Allegheny L (forfeit)
NOTES: The West Allegheny Indians were unable to field a team.
An alarming number of players were suffering from the seasonal
bug that has cut a swath through the midwest. They called off.
Undoubtedly, it is the same strain that affected Coach Joe's
eleven-year olds earlier, so beware. Drink lots of fluids.
Get plenty of sleep. See a doctor if the symptoms persist.
Been there - Done that. It's a mighty nasty bug, but probably
not as nasty as an encounter with Coach Donnie and his Mighty
Knights. Just the thought of that could drive anyone to call
in sick. We extend our best wishes to the Indian players.
