Pig Hill - Rialto Street
|
This is Rialto Street, the bottom of
which is located along East Ohio Street at the 31st Street Bridge. Shown here
in April 1914, looking up towards the Troy Hill neighborhood, it was originally
called Ravine Street because it followed a natural ravine in the hillside.
The street has a 24% grade and ranks as
the fifth steepest in the city of Pittsburgh. Rialto Street is also called
"Pig Hill," a nickname dating back to the days when herds of pigs were regularly
herded up the hill from the Herr's Island stockyards to nearby slaughterhouses. |
