On September 5, 1951, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette featured this photo showing Leonard Zankel's "Big Step." The caption read: It's a long way up to the door of school the first time you go. Leonard Zankel, 5, of 1008 Bellaire Avenue, Brookline, is taken in tow by his sister, Sandra Louise. The picture on the right shows his introduction to Miss Elizabeth Martsolf, first-grade teacher at Brookline School, who makes him feel right at home.
