Eddie may have hit the longest shot, but he did not hit the most homers in a season. That honor belonged to Tim "Crazy Legs" Schumacher, also pictured, who smacked an incredible twenty-three homers. One last piece of All-Star trivia: This Brookline team was runner-up in the 32-team Robinson Township Lions Invitation Tournament, the best finish for a Brookline team up to that point, to be surpassed only by the championship team of 1979. NOTE: Tim Schumacher's homerun record stood for forty-three years, until a young slugger named Brian Vogel came along. In the new era of in-house, travel and all-star tournament competition, Vogel blasted fifty-six homers in forty games as an eleven-year old, and sixty-four homers in forty games as a twelve-year old, averaging 1.4 and 1.6 homers per game respectively. Before Vogel, it has been years since anyone managed more than ten homers in a year. In comparison, Schumacher averaged 1.15 per game in 1972. Now, it is oftentimes hard to compare records from different eras, but without question it is safe to say that Timmy Shumacher and Brian Vogel will go down in local Little League history as Brookline's premier Sultan's of Swat.
