Brookline
Wins Beechview Tournament
Brookline baseball teams- Junior
League, Colt, Pony, Senior Little League and Little League - always hang
tough in outside competition.
Now the Minor League All-Stars are
newcommers to that group following their clutch victory in the annual
Beechview tournament in which they rebounded from the loser's bracket to
blast Bloomfield twice for the title.
Much credit for the Minor League
All-Star success must go to Manager Jack McGee along with his able
coaches Carmen Tripodi, Ron Bertolina and Bob Hyland.
And don't forget the boys who
proved that they are champions all the way.
Brookline started by belting
Beechview, 8-5. Then came that 15-7 pounding at the hands of Bloomfield,
a team which loomed as almost certain champion. But our kids battled back
and whipped the other Beechview team, 10-6, and then outhustled,
outslugged and outfought Bloomfield 15-14.
That set up the finale and
Brookline was equal to it, winning the best pitched game of the
tournament, 2-0, as Manager Mcgee juggled four pitchers through the six
innings.
The quartet yielded only four hits
and Scott Hyland, the started, who worked 2 hitless innings, was credited
with the victory.
John Raimondi yielded one hit in
his two innings and Joe Achille gave up a pair. Carl Gibbon was brought
in with two on and only one out in the sixth and retired Bloomfield to
get the save.
Actually, Brookline won the game
in the first inning when, with the bases loaded, Steve Schneider was hit
by a pitch to force in a run. That's all we needed.
Bobby Bertolina slapped a triple
and double while Sammy Achille doubled and socked two singles to lead the
Brookline attack, which produced ten hits off the Bloomfield
pitchers.
