The Brookline Knights 12-13 year old Midget team finished a remarkable 2000 season with a stunning come from behind, double-overtime, 48-46 victory over the Carlynton Cougars on October 28 at Montour High School.

Led by the offensive fireworks of running back C.K. Mayo (26 carries-207 yards) and receiver Joe Barry (5 catches-111 yards), and backed by a crafty defense that bent but would not break, the Knights took home the 2000 WPYSFL championship in an overtime shootout that left their fans gasping for breath.

Leading until late in the game, the Knights found themselves behind by 6 points with only two minutes to play and 68 yards to go for the tying score. Quarterback Jeremy Bock (8-19, 117 yards) and the Knights offense were up to the challenge.

Mayo grinded it out on the ground and Bock connected with Barry on two fourth down passes to move the ball to the one-yard line with seven seconds remaining. Mayo then punched it in for the touchdown to cap off the eleven play drive and tie the score at 32-32. A failed conversion attempt left the score even and the game went into overtime.

In the first overtime period it was strength against strength as Brookline's C.K. Mayo and Carlynton's Dominique Brentley (38 carries-267 yards) both put eight points on the board.

Mayo added another eight to start the second overtime and Carlynton answered with a touchdown of their own. The Cougars lined up at the three for their conversion attempt and the Knights defense dug in.

Brentley went up the middle but was stopped at the one-yard line, short of the goal. After a most exciting championship contest, Brookline emerged victorious, 48-46.

For several members of this team, the 2000 Midget title marks the completion of a grand slam of sorts. These noble Knights are the only Brookline group to win titles in each division, taking the Mitey-Mite crown in 1998 and the Termite crown in 1996.

For coaches Brian and Joe Nicholas, it was their fourth Midget championship in five years. They have been the most successful coaching duo in the history of the Knights organization, yet this title may have been the sweetest.

"This is not the most talented team I've had", said Coach Joe, "but you guys are the best team I've ever had. You came together, worked hard and never gave up. You worked like a team and you deserved this title."

Coach Brian added, "You guys never quit. You were down and you fought back. You'll remember this for the rest of your lives. You are the champions!"
