Constructing the South End

Here are some photos showing the construction of the South Hills End (South Portal) of the Liberty Tunnels. The initial grading began in December 1919. Boring of the tunnels began the following year. The Liberty Tunnels were completed in 1924 and opened to traffic. The Liberty Tunnels were considered an engineering marvel at the time. The opening of the Tubes was instrumental in the development of South Hills communities.
