The first two photos show Brookline Boulevard at Pioneer Avenue when roadbed reconstruction, including new intersections, utility lines and sidewalks, were completed in June of 1936. This was a major civic and traffic improvement for the community and part of an overall upgrade that prepared Brookline for another population explosion in the 1940s.

This is the intersection of Brookline Boulevard and West Liberty Avenue. Today a car dealership stands on this corner. Back in 1936 it was more a picture of classic Americana with a Sunoco station complete with old-style gasoline pumps. Brookline Boulevard heads up to the left over the newly widened cobblestone roadway. This was the first time vehicular traffic took this route into Brookline. Prior to 1936, only trolleys used this path.
